This week, as part of the Indie Writers Unite! Neverending Blog Tour, I answered a few questions put forth by indie author Heather Marie Adkins on her blog Stone Cottage on the Hill. On the flip side, I have indie author Melissa A. Smith in the studio today to talk about her Guardians of Man series of books.
Melissa, tell us a little about yourself:
I am a wife and mother with three…erm, I mean, two teenaged sons. We live in the Midwest where I’ve lived for almost my entire life. I have a cat (the famous Hypnocat) who likes to ‘play’ gently. The school year has now started and I have returned to the classroom full of booger-slippery hands and freely-distributed sneezes.
Well, that’s certainly . . . evocative.
I also currently have three titles available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords.
Is writing your sole career? If not, what else do you do?
I wish! Nope. Actually I just went back to work this week! I work in preschool and school is now back in session :/ *ho hum* (totally would rather be home writing!)
Tell us a little bit about your book.
My first series available is about guardian angels and the people they help, hate and fall in love with.
What excites you most about your book’s topic? Why did you choose it?
I choose it because it’s my spin on a genie and your three wishes. Only you’re not limited to three wishes, you get as many as you need to succeed in life. The only thing is you don’t get to keep the Guardian forever. They decide when and how long to help you.
How long did the book take you from start to finish?
The first one only took me three months from start to finish! The second took a little over four and a half months to finish.
What surprised you the most about the book writing process?
How easy the story flowed almost fully formed from my fingertips!
What aspect of writing the book did you find particularly challenging?
The cutting out of things that weren’t needed. But in the end it made the story better.
Did you do any research for your books, or did you write from experience?
I did. I spent a lot of time at the library and online researching angels and their supposed hierarchy. While I made up some things, I did use some traditionally observed roles and rules.
Did you seek the support of a writer’s group or class?
I have and do! The authors in the FB group Indie Writers Unite are an absolutely wonderful group when you need feedback!
What projects are you currently working on?
Currently I’m working on a Guardians novella and an as yet untitled paranormal romance.
What can we look forward to in your next book?
Hmmmm. Well, let’s see… My take on Atlantis (it’s real and hidden in plain sight) where they have special features known only to their race. Oh, and they have contact with the gods. ie: Zeus, Artemis, Pandora…you get the picture.
